Andreas Angelidakis, 2018

First presented at documenta 14 (Athens, 2017), this work by Athens-based artist Andreas Angelidakis brings together architecture, design, and play. Originally consisting of 74 modular seating blocks adaptable to different types of gatherings, it was later shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Toronto). Here at THEMUSEUM, you are invited to explore with 30 modules.

Angelidakis takes inspiration from Athens, the birthplace of democracy, and reimagines how people gather. By encouraging movement and reconfiguration, DEMOS dissolves the traditional divide between speaker and audience. The colourful surface patterns, drawn from Greek and Ottoman folklore, add a playful character to this collective experiment.

Angelidakis’s practice explores architecture as a flexible, evolving system: part physical, part digital. His works are in the collections of the National Museum of Contemporary Art (Athens) and the Art Institute of Chicago, and have been exhibited internationally, including at Le Jeu de Paume (Paris) and Turner Contemporary (Margate, UK).
